We like to think we know a thing or two when it comes to SEO.
Over the years we have been through thick and thin in our love-hate relationship with Google. Avocado SEO aim to pass along as much impartial, and accurate information as possible – to help you and your business skyrocket to the top of the SERPS with a well-rounded SEO campaign.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization, what this basically means is “Get to the top of Google”. Someone that performs SEO is (confusingly) called an SEO aka a search engine optimizer.
The main principle behind SEO is that all Google is, is an algorithm. And algorithms can be manipulated.
Google is nothing more than a highly advanced sequence of equations based on website metrics. If you know how any algorithm works, you can manipulate the data points to alter the final result.
This is what SEOs do, they spend their lives trying to decipher the different ranking factors that are considered by Googles algorithm, and then they try to perform actions that will give them a “higher score”. The higher score in turn gives them a higher ranking position in Google.
However, Google hates SEO. They just want people to make the best websites they possibly can, and allow their algorithms to determine what should rank highest without outside interference.
Due to this, they keep most of the ranking factors that are taken into account by their algorithms a secret (but many of them have been discovered and made public over the many years this virtual arms race has been going on).
Why Isn’t My Website Ranking?
Because you have weak SEO. You may have read a blog post or two somewhere that gave you a slight glimpse into one or two of the 200+ ranking factors that google takes into account.
These days you need a well-rounded, properly thought out, and expertly executed SEO campaign to get the top spots. The competition is just too fierce for anything less than this to bring success
How Do I Do SEO?
There are two main sides to any well rounded SEO campaign, on page SEO and off page SEO.
Regardless of what some self-proclaimed gurus might tell you, on page SEO will not rank your website on its own. Unless you are in a super uncompetitve (and therefore usually unprofitable) niche, you will need off page SEO to get anywhere at all.
Off page SEO is the opposite of on page SEO, and it refers to work conducted on other websites. There are a few different things this could mean, but 99% of the time off page SEO refers to link building.
Link building is the most important part of SEO. Google counts links as “Votes”. In a nutshell, the more links you have, the higher you will rank. But be warned, not all links are good links, and it is very easy to harm your site if you go and buy thousands of low-quality links somewhere. You need to learn what is a good link, and how to get them.
If you have poor on page SEO – your link building efforts will be much less effective. You need both to be successful. Think of it like this – off page SEO is the engine pushing you to the top of the SERPS, on page SEO is the glue that holds everything together. A well rounded, long term, quality SEO strategy looks at the various aspects of both on page and off page SEO. When you have both sides working together in harmony, you are going to rank and bank all day long.
